Yep Steve I got frustrated by how bloated and annoying adobe became just to do a simple job of viewing a PDF. If a piece of software becomes too offensive, someone will write a cut down alternative.

I got similarly jacked off with Real Player and lo and behold, a few minutes googling found a lightweight free alternative
