Thanks for your hints with PS.
I took the M88 shot and did a quick gaussian blur on the stars as you suggested and I think that as you can see there is an overall improvement in the aesthetic quality of the shot. I very slightly sharpened the galaxy in the second shot

You can reverse this effect by selecting the stars only using the colour range tool and using a bit of gaussian blur to soften the edges of the stars a bit.
