Granted for someone who knows a bit about IT your pick and choose method may be appropriate. Unfortunately, the majority of users out there won't have the depth of knowledge, nor the desire, to individually pick and choose patches. It is in this circumstance that you will find two classes of people - one class which has automatic updates enabled and a regularly patched machine removing vulnerabilities, and another class of people with unpatched computers. I'm sure you can guess which class of computer users are the ones that I always see with problems
