Amazing resolution indeed.
I read somewhere recently that with construction and operating costs out to 2010, the HST will be about $6 billion. Some might see that as a poor investment but the Hubble's contribution to astronomy and cosmology has been immense. I think the images that it produces for public consumption, like the Hubble Heritage series, has done just so much to lift the profile of astronomy at the grass roots level.
