Love everything mentioned so far ...
... the classics like Forbidden Planet (they had little cubes that, when inserted into the viewer, played movies! 1957! Now I have compact flash and memory sticks!)
... Contact. Huge fan of Carl Sagan (and Jodie Foster)
... but number 1 would have to be the original Star Wars! The Empire Strikes Back may be a better movie but Star Wars was revolutionary (more so than 2001), a classic "western" style good versus evil and a great sound track.
