I've always concidered the best disaster movies to be "The Day After Tomorrow" and "On The Beach" (the 1950's version with Ava Gardner, not so much the fairly recent Bryan Brown one).
The threat of nuclear war is always in the back of peoples minds. What would happen if they actually did hit those buttons?
Both of these senarios are disturbingly real.
The stuff of nightmares.
