Actually, there is one little proggy that is brilliant imho (brilliant because not only does it work a treat, it is also free!!). Called Spybot (
http://www.spybot.info/en/index.html). Among other things, if a recalcitrant programme tries to change the registry in any way, spybot stops the attempt in its tracks, and asks the user if the change should go ahead.
