I should add that websites are getting larger/more complex over time also. The pictures are getting larger, there's Java and Flash which all take time to load and chew resourses.

One big problem that really does slow your browsing though is spyware. Even a quick visit to the wrong site and bingo, there's some nasty little trojan that's reporting back to base, getting into the registry, changing your browser settings and suddenly the computer is a snail. It's just recently that this has become a big problem. Worse than viruses imo and there doesn't seem to be much in the way of protection.
