Chris, the BSOD appeared after recently downloading some updates, it's a widely reported problem, I can live with it, as once the Security Centre notification is turned off there are no further problems.

It's s shame Vista is as flaky as it is, I installed an application on 2 different Vista machines last week, on one the app ran like a swiss watch, the other refused to run despite identical installation steps. I've seen that sort of inconsistency on several occasions.
