Eeek I'm not sure, i've never seen the software that you're using to capture. I'm assuming though that there's some settings to control the exposure?
Perhaps if the DSI works with k3ccdtools you can use that software to capture your avi's, that way you have full control over the settings being used.
Next time we meet up I'd like to have a look at the DSI (and its software) in action so I can help out more next time.
