As a quick play around, get the original data and apply the photoshop shadows highlight filter seveal times and play with the radius setting.... it does some strange things at a low setting (under 20 pixels ) you may have to play a bit to see if it does much.
I did try the shadow highlights filter in a basic fashion Clive but couldn't really get it to improve the visibility of the arcs much but I had another play this morning and you may be on to something with doing several iterations..but gotta go to work now, stay tuned
