interesting comparison, i suspect the big telescope have applied some type of morphological operations on it and remultiplied it back into the image, if you had access to the same software i reckon it would be more evident as light is still light and they have just collected more of it, its the processing that has revealed it..
As a quick play around, get the original data and apply the photoshop shadows highlight filter seveal times and play with the radius setting.... it does some strange things at a low setting (under 20 pixels ) you may have to play a bit to see if it does much.
