cant remember the plot of the first .. so as a standalone movie without reference to the first its good, i like the fact that 1.the Govts are paranoid and dont act sensibly (true),2. that we have destroyed to some degree our planet (true),3. and that we will not check our behaviour in this problem (true). so it touches on several actual relevant issues that face us today.. the ending is lame though, i liked the end of On The Beach where everyone dies, a little more believable and i would have preferred it to finish that way with a new dawn arriving on a restructured planet living in balance, i think that would make more of a point to the three issues above.
Mind you if a contact was made from a "civilization" from elsewhere in the galaxy, they would be so far ahead .. firing guns at them would be so dumb, they could just erase us from orbit or higher. plots such as independance day where we " take them out " is a nice fantasy but thats all.
