Jase - thanks for the comprehensive response. I was going straight to the JPEG version from the un-flattened greyscale 16 bit aRGB version - so just about got everything you mentioned the wrong way around.
In terms of monitor colour calibration I haven't worked out how to do this - can you recommend any good references?
