We all have hobbies. As amateur astronomers, we are probably mainly a quiet bunch, with RA and Dec motors humming quietly in the back yard.
What these hoons do on the road is unacceptable, but whenever I see a story on the news that someone has crashed their car and it shouldn't happen, etc, etc, there is no mention of any outlets for these people's enthusiasm, in a safe and controlled manner.
I have been a member of car clubs and motor racing clubs for the past 7 years, and these clubs cater for car enthusiasts, whether you want to go on a cruise with heaps of other cars, or race around a track, or do a show and shine and show off your nicely prepared car etc. Some places like Calder Park in Vic offer legal off street drags on a Friday night, and I'm sure other venues around the place offer drag nights. Many cars are being marketed on their performance levels, so if you go out and buy one of these 500 hp things, you may as well see what she can do, in a safe and controlled manner.
