Steps are in place to make Tekapo's night sky a world heritage site. already local laws are in place where outside lights have to point down away from the sky and all the street lights are sheilded from above to reduce glow. This is all to do with the Mt John Observatory near by as it's good for the community with tourism.

By the way I don't live in Tekapo I live in a nicely light polluted city a couple hours down the road.
