I think DOBS are a very useful mount for the purpose they were designed for. I agree the chipboard type are a little flimsy and don't like wet weather. but the one I have (20 years old now) made from 1/2" ply is quite good and stable. So much so that I spent a few days in the workshop and converted into a solid Alt/Azm mount with leveling table, ball bearings and a drive mechanism that has a goto facility and tracks very well.
