I usually keep the oldies (tell them toss them in the back unless they are well and truely buggered). Got six under the house that still have some tread on them and will do as spares if ever need them. I had a few more only they were used temporarily as spares til no longer roadworthy (had the pajero since 92 when I bought it brand new).
Key to long life is regular rotation, proper inflation pressure, good wheel alignment, regular rebalancing, and stay off the beach (makes the tread disappear astonishingly fast - fishing on the local beaches is pretty ordinary so it's been several years since I did any beach driving).
