First of all, Steve, that's a really good 253! Might look better with the yellow cast gone but then who am I (mr blue cast) to talk .

To me the dust trails clearly "rise" from the galaxy disc and from all over it and this is the best orientation of the galaxy to showcase these amazing structures. clearly revealing these pillars of dust is sign of a good 253 image IMO.

While RJ's version is indeed incredible, for me the best amateur NGC 253 image I have ever seen (perhaps even the best overall vista of the entire galaxy?) was done by the Spiegel team with a 16" Keller RCOS killer in Namibia, for me this is one incredible image! Going by Johannes Schedlers recent work with a 20" version the skies from Namibia must have excellent seeing at times :
