Goodonyah John, congrats on the new camera, you're going to have fun.
What I'd suggest is to use it in Auto mode and check what settings the camera used.
When you feel confident with the functions put it in manual mode and replicate those settings, then begin to experiment.
Soon you'll have a feel of what to expect.
