My suggestion would be to get involved in ASWA (
see their website). They have various monthly viewing and meeting nights. The Hands On Workshop is probably the kind of place you could get the advice you're after. Other viewing nights might be an option but other observers are more likely going to be keen to do their own observing at those nights, where as Hands On Workshop is about learning and working with equipment.
