You'll get vignetting at 17mm but it should work at 85mm. I also have a 18-55mm kit lens. Here are some examples with the DCR-150 at 18mm, 55mm, 70mm and 300mm. The greater the zoom the bigger it is. There is a caveat however, these examples are from the DCR-150, the DCR-250 will take you closer again You'd best try it at a camera shop before you buy. When you try it, use the flash and turn off the autofocus - moving the camera back and forth to achieve focus works the best.
