I know this thread is a little dark but there is a lot of tongue in cheek humour as well. If you read many of the threads on this forum you will soon see not being able to spell has little impact on people posting and certainly adds to the flavour of the posts. UK English is very difficult to learn as there are so many conventions that constantly change adding to the confusion and on the whole I think most Aussie's couldn't care less (many of the rules I had drummed into me as a child no longer count and I still have trouble with "i"s and "e"s). Most of the odd spelling is a left over from hundreds of years ago when the language was spoken with a gutteral tone hence Knight or night rather than nite and so on. I agree that spelling should not be a barrier for people wanting to have a say but I also have memories of Sister Agnes cracking me over the knuckles with a ruler everytime I made a spelling mistake. You tend not to forget lessons like that
