Starting in the shallow end is a good way to go.. I did the same thing, started with the 8" still on the dobsonian base with a cheapie 2x barlow.. It does give you a chance to hone your processing skills and also get your capture routine down pat. It also helps you get a better idea of if you like planetary imaging enough to continue to spend money on it... a 5x powermate is not really a useable item for much else... and for the money, you really want to know you'll get use out of it.
Alex, I don't have a problem uploading the un edited image. Attached are the stacked R,G & B files.

A 5 x is on the shopping list but I will make do with the 2.5 x for the moment. I will concentrate on technique and post processing to gain improvement.
