A while ago I sent something by registered mail - it arrived at the destination after a couple of weeks - soaked in oil and wrapped in a plastic bag...
But private business often isn't much better. I bought a camera lens over the Internet from New York. It was sent by UPS - 3 days from NY to Perth (30,000 km); 5 days, three phone calls and three emails to get from Perth to Fremantle (30 km).
