Colossus; The Forbin Project is a great film about super computers but I'm not sure if it's available on dvd. You might find the book by DF jones, though.
The Andromeda Strain from the early 70's concerns biological contamination from outer space and is directed by Robert Wise and written by Michael Crichton. Again, I'm not sure of dvd availability.
Charly, from Daniel Keyes' short story Flowers for Algernon concerning attempts to increase intelligence by surgical means. The movie is pretty good with Cliff Robertson putting in a stunning performance as the medical subject (I think he even scored an Oscar for it) but as is often the case, the source novel is far superior.
Silent Running, directed by 2001's effects wizard, Douglas Trumbul. Far above the Earth orbit huge teraspheres, the last remaining samples of eco systems from a polluted Earth. When budgetary cutbacks order the dumping of said spheres, one man fights desperately to save just one. I know for a fact that this one is available on dvd as I've got a copy.
All of these date from '68 to '71 so availability could be a problem.
