Steve, yes, it will do that if not careful. You need to mask the highlights such a nebulae, galaxies and stars so you are only applying it on the background. If not, you'll find that the balance background colour function will fade the foreground features. This is what I suspect has happened to your two images, both have muted colours. It will still have a minor effect on the foreground, but you can then raise the black point to re-gain contrast. Personally, I think the moon is only partly to blame, but without having a good look at the subs its difficult to say. Keep up the good work.
