JohnB did a eyepiece review about 1 or 2 months ago. as for your problems could be a number of things and the fact that there would be a cross over point at which magnification would be useless. Remember the more glass the light has to pass through the more likely the degridation. Don't forget Mr Icemans link for jet stream winds, that doesn't help either!
