No need to update anything unless you have issues or want to check out new features. You may not use ASCOM anyway. I would recommend reading up on ASCOM if you've got the time. Its a great bit of code that handles instrument API (Application Programming Interface) calls in a universal manner. This in turn allows interoperability between various astronomical instruments such as mount, cameras and software (to name a few). In simple terms, its the glue that allows all heterogeneous components to communicate with each other (along with some other benefits).
