If you run skype and leave your machine on all the time with skype logged on you will be used as a supernode, i.e. your machine will carry some connection details and will incurr traffic for (some) other users initial call setup. On large networks with many skype users the resource used can be significant, that's the reason why many corporations and government bodies ban the use of skype.
