What I did was, "Layer"->"New Adjustment Layer"->"Levels", and then set the levels as per the screenshot below. You can adjust this to your taste, but I set both the black point and the white point more towards the middle, which gives more contrast. You have to be careful when using to avoid a) clipping the faint details, and b) blowing out the highlights.

I also did some slight noise reduction, and then some slight sharpening using "smart sharpen".

The second attachment is the modified version.
