You are quite right. I get different readings from my two rain gauges which are a 'mere' 15 or 20 metres apart.
A 300mm difference is incredible. Don't get me wrong, please, I believe you.
My electronic type rain gauge is currently misbehaving and I'm 'mucking around' with it at the moment. Best get back to it before the heavens open.
