Have you ever tried to use POV-Ray software for planet creation? This can be done through the mathematical construction., and comes as an example with this free program from http://www.povray.org/. (planet.pov)
Haven't done this for years, but samples of some of these can be viewed at;

Samples like these are often used for generating planets for video games.
