Another thing to do David - pseudo time exposure - go HDR, but you'll need a tripod.
Take a shot in auto - see what the camera timed the shot at. Go to manual, set the f-stop to the same as the camera used. Grab five shots all at the same f-stop and vary the timing by a click in each frame (2-clicks under-speed, 1-click under-speed, auto-set speed, 1-click over-speed, 2-clicks over-speed).
Merge to HDR using anyone of a number of downloadable HDR programs. You'll get a beautifully-smooth image. The more frames - the smoother.
