These are simply two examples of things our modern society has produced that most people in an industrialised nation take for granted. There are many, many others.
Have a good look at history before you pine for such a "simple" lifestyle, for it is the lifestyle itself you actually want, not the life.
By all means, cut down on your impact on the planet, it's a fine ideal, but don't sacrifice the hard earned gains of our ancestors chasing a dream.

Aloha Stuart,
like i wrote, bring the best of both worlds into "balance"....
i would never destroy those things that are worth while
in the "long run".
it's like surfing,

you must always be re-balancing yourself
to the "center".....
88888888888888888888888888888888888 888888888888888
Imagine this:
See a circle split in 3 pie sections,
a triune, if you will. With a small
center circle in the center, also with
the dividing 3 sections:
1/3 are predominantly "Creators"
1/3 are predominantly "Preservers"
1/3 are predominantly "Destroyers"
All are made up of all 3 but you
will see that i used: "Predominantly".
This is not to say that any is better
than the other. All of them has their
place. You can call this the Wheel of
Life.
Now, those "Creators" who are "centered"
in the wheel, only creates what is best
and should be created. Things that will
bring lasting good to future generations.
Not things that will hurt themselves or
others.
Those "Preservers" who are "Centered"
in the wheel, only preserve what is best
and what needs to be preserved. Again,
things that are safe and true for everyone
on the planet. Not preserving things that
have been shown to be harmful.
So with the last 1/3 in the wheel of life
who are predominantly "Destroyers". They
have a very important part to play as well.
Those that are "Centered" in the wheel, will
only destroy those things that have proven
to be of great danger to us. And not those
things that are truly precious.
Life self balances itself, one-way or the
other. Those who are not in the "center
of the wheel" so to speak, are truly on
the outer edge and if they are not careful
will be thrown off.
The deal is, that in those pie sections, very
few are in the center now it would seem. So
each and everyone of us must constantly be
asking ourselves how can i bring my own self
closer and closer to this pure axis or center
in my own life?
May you & yours always be in fine health and
great calm, with gratitude and warm aloha,
Lance aka "abellhunter"
