cool story duncan, enjoyed hearing/reading aurora obs/stories specially from the '80's, must of been quite a show!
my first aurora's i saw was only some minor activity white beams/glows, was from the coorong while nightfishing and camping - we thought they were searchlights from boats way out, but i now realise what they were of course. one time was about 1980 and another was mid to late '80's
always wanted to see a good aurora from the south coast
one thing about down there, and other open coastal spots, even lower yorkes, they can get periods a lot of very very strong and constant wind, but goolwa would be the worst for that.
there's good/decent spots all over the place, but they all have their issues - 'local cloud' is a big one in the hills and down south
but elevation is king for 'seeing' still, but the north is the most cloud free as mentioned
