I have a SkyScout and it does work as advertised. It is a nifty little thing.

It is very susceptable to "magnetic" intereference when they are next to metal. I even need to remove my watch so mounting on a metal dob will not work well in my opinion.

My kids have a lot of fun with it and I use it to help find stars to align on.

Is it a necessary item...no. Charts/software/plansiphere/knowledge can all do what this thing does...but for a lazy person like me it is kind of fun.
