reverse mounting is a quick and cheap way of getting a macro lens setup, i'm not 100% on the science behind it, but my understanding is that because of the way the optics are made, by reverse mounting the lens, it provides 'extra' magnification of the subject as well as allowing you to get closer to the subject. for example, with the nifty-fifty on properly, i could get about 40cm away, reverse mounted, however, my fixed distance is around 10-15cm. see? closer!

as for mounting with rubber bands, that's something that's better explained with pictures, which will have to wait till tomorrow after work, sorry!
