Fred Hoyle should have got the Nobel prize for his work in elucidating the nucleosythesis of heavy atoms from lighter ones in stars and supernova.
His so called 'wacky' ideas that went against the establishment of scientifically 'correct' thought precluded him from ever being considered by the unimaginative old establishment whose prostates were bigger than their brains.
Science is not about being smug in your knowledge. It is about coming up with an hypothesis and testing everything by experiment!
