A handy tip when shooting outdoors.
To help eliminate the harsh shadows on any subject, wrap some foil around a piece of cardboard and use it as a reflector to direct sunlight back onto the shadows.
Crinkle it up a little before you wrap it on to diffuse the light.
You can also use the camera's built in flash if it has one to fill in the dark areas.
