Use levels to initially set the white point. Set the white point so that the brightest regions are 20-30 points below the clipping threshold. These values with vary. Then use curves to bring out the dim regions. If your curves process results in white clipping, then undo all changes and reset your initial levels lower. You can do some tricky curves in PS, such as a typical S to dull the white point or sharp R to (similar to DDP) or a soft Spline. Just experiment to see what works.
