O.K. Coach, the 6" is a good choice for a starter. You'll only need to go about 1/2 hr out of the big smoke to get reasonably dark skies. When you pick up the t'scope, buy a Planishere as well. This will help you find your way around the sky. Oh, & a red LED torch, so you don't ruin your eyes dark adaption. (more tech. terms). Don't use a white light.
