Hi Masutover & Astroturf,
There was an email about this on the SUTHASI Yahoo group which advised that the Waterfall site is temporarily out of action due (once more) to vandalism of the lock. This was the message:
"Due to further vandalism of the waterfall lock and chain, the NPWS have replaced the normal waterfall lock with one which our keys will not open.
Waterfall is therefore closed until further notice.
Observing on designated Waterfall nights for December and January (unless advised otherwise) will therefore take place at the West Engadine Reserve near Furntree Avenue, weather permitting."
As you can see there is an alternate which is at the small west-facing reserve, Ferntree Ave Engadine (about 2 mins brisk walk fom my home!). I'm not certain, but I reckon the "Waterfall" night is tonight. Weather doesn't look good at the moment.
That site is okay with a ZLM generally about +4.8 to +5.0. Waterfall is a fraction better than Engadine and the ZLM there is about +5.2 to +5.3. It does seem to be a bit more subject to costal cloud build-up when an inversion rolls in over the coast than my home in Engadine for some reason.
The alternate observing site is at Bargo (near Mittagong) and the ZLM there is generally about +6.1 to +6.3 -- much better. It is far from ideal but considering it is only about 55 mins drive from Engadine, not too shabbby either. There is significant sky glow low in the NE from Sydney -- just avoid that area of sky! The next Bargo observing night is next weekend -- 9 December.
There are directions on how to get to the Bargo site off Yarran Rd Bargo on the Suthasi web-site. I assume you guys are members or intending members -- we welcome guests gladly but if you are going to be a long-term regular, join the society. It's the very best club in Sydney with teriffic facilities, our own 'scopes and imaging gear, newly renovated clubhouse (we've even got a loo now!) and a friendly crowd of people.
Best,
Les D
