Nah mate - easy stuff.
Just sat down and followed it step by step. The image posted above was my first try! It's a trick I've been putting off for ages to learn. But I can see it's usefulness on heaps of objects.
One thing though - in the guide after making a B+W mask it says to open a new image with View>New View...I couldn't find the New View command in PS CS so had to fumble a work-around.
