The Canon camera is certainly a step up from the Pentax, but equipment certainly doesn’t maketh the man! In my ignorance, I depressed the shutter release ˝ way and focused on some ripples in the water below where I anticipated the seagull would fly. This "locks" the focus point. I then tried to predict the flight path of the bird and fully depress the shutter release at the point where I anticipated the seagull would be. Only this single shot worked, just – the other 30 or so were duds, but that is the beauty of digital.
I have since discovered that I could have set the lens to a follow focus mode, where it would have continued to attempt to focus on the moving bird right up to the point of shutter release. There’s still some of the old 35mm manual film camera stuff cluttering up my brain!
