Promiences slowly expand and some even expand before your eyes over 5 minutes, everything depends on what is forming them. They are formed in a variety of ways. A lot of which I am still trying to understand myself.

Most prominences I have seen only last a couple of hours and they collapse back down onto the solar surface. This prominence was a little unusual in that it lasted several days. The plasma that formed it has now collapsed down onto the surface again.

There are some types of prominences that can be released magnetically from the solar surface and will escape the solar gravity. This can happen in conjunction with coronal mass ejections or during really violent times near solar max from explosive flaree. X class flares can for prominences to release and escape the solar gravity.

So in terms of this prominence, I check each day on SOHO, I saw this prominence and it looked quite large, so I setup outside and there it was. I checked the sun the following day and the day after that. Each day it changed shape, the second day it was larger and the third day it was smaller and collapsing.

Hope that answers your questions.
