Does any one have tips for High Dynamic Range processing in Photoshop CS2?

I am just starting to play with auto-merge RAW files of extend shots with high-dynamic range (e.g. M42 is a classic because it has faint clouds and bright central stars - so if you don't process it with HDR - you blow out the core).

So I select Automatic -> HDR merge,
grab all shots and select Auto-align,
set the white point right to the far right,

Next I modify this from 32 bit -> 16 bit per channel using local adoption and set the curves inbuilt here to prevent blooming of the core.

Trouble is I find the alignment isn't as good as Deepskystacker - so sometimes I get doughnuts.

Is there a way to stack in DSS and then HDR merge in Photoshop CS2?
