Greg I have native rats and possums and many birds lizards etc. I have only had problems with wires being nibbled in the roof by rattus rattus. I have a constant elimination program for these that will not impinge on any native animals. Point taken though.
I feed my possums the odd bit of bread when there is little food about. One night at about 3AM I was focusing and turned around and there were three possums on their haunches in a line about a meter away looking at me. When I moved towards the house they followed me and waited for their bread all in a line on the steps behind the back door. One even ventured inside! I think since I am out so often at night that they have just got used to me.
