Getting Published in national newspapers ?

Now I know there are quite a few Journalists here on IIS, so I would love to get your advise on getting freelance work published in national newspapers (IE Age, Australian, SMH etc )
I regularly have articles published in our local paper, but I am looking for a "Down South" audience for this work.

Here is an excerpt:

Arnhemland – The Homelands experience (Part 1)

With all the publicity on the dis-functionality of Aboriginal communities & the blanket intervention by the federal Government across the Northern Territory, I feel it is timely to present my story on the positive experiences I have had in the homelands in North East Arnhem Land:

Having presented a number of Astronomy events here in NE Arnhem land NT over the past 4yrs as a founding Member & President of Gove Amateur Astronomers Inc. (GAA), my Adventures across the dark northern skies took an exciting new direction in 2006.
With Yolngu community involvement in a number of the above events, and GAA’s involvement at the 2006 Garma Festival, I felt privileged to have been asked to present educational astronomy experiences to a number of Yolngu homeland schools ..........

And so it continues, with the article being about 650 words and part 1 of a 3 part story.
I would love to get your advise, I could just Email to the papers editors, but perhaps this is not the best approach
