joe_smith, your post jogged a memory regarding the Mayan Calendar/end o' the world thing and that was that some experts didn't believe that the event was some cosmic cataclysm, but rather some devastating technological event. As the calendar indicated an end of recorded time some hypothesised that man might have discovered some time altering technology gone wrong - can't believe I'm writing this!!!

ps - enjoyed your post, but I cant help think that when we/academia look back at cultures we mythologize to a large degree, the past after all is a different country! As for "end of days" scenarios , look no further than the Book of Revelations for an equally strange curtain call embraced by many Xians worldwide and very much alive too!
